Frontier Philanthropy: Positive Climate Action and Innovation

Trillions of dollars in annual financing are needed to reach net-zero and for the planet to transition to an inclusive climate-and-nature positive future by 2050. COP28 has seen the realisation of past commitments on climate finance and continues to drive momentum to deploy capital at scale. Funders should continue to capitalise on this significant opportunity to accelerate our progress and make systemic shifts to tackle the urgent challenges facing our planet. This session will spotlight opportunities for public, private, and philanthropic stakeholders to accelerate and scale positive climate action through innovative mechanisms for multi-sector collaboration, catalytic financing, and capability-building.

Making the Impossible Possible: Transforming Health and Education through Philanthropy

Amid different global challenges, ranging from healthcare disparities to a lack of access to quality education, the urgency for innovative and holistic solutions to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 has never been more pronounced. Achieving audacious positive impact is undeniably complex. Yet, history has shown that catalytic societal breakthroughs are possible and can significantly alter our common trajectory. Session 2A: Driving Action Towards a Climate-positive World

Anchored by Southeast Asia Climate and Nature-based Solutions (SCeNe) Coalition

2024 is a crucial year to invoke a "step-change" toward integrating efforts to tackle the climate crisis together. Collaboration, climate finance, a supportive policy environment and taking an ecosystem approach to climate action are needed if we are to advance efforts to combat the climate crisis.

Carbon markets, Nature-based Solutions (NbS), climate tech and locally driven efforts are some of the solutions that are not only necessary to help the world meet the Paris Agreement target of keeping below a 1.5 degree increase and adapt to an increasingly volatile climate, but also critical to deliver on the Global Biodiversity Framework. NbS for example can reduce vulnerability to climate disasters that especially affect marginalised people, while providing food security and jobs, and its key role was recognised at COP28.

Session 1: The Power of Health Innovation: Future-proofing Infectious Disease Management

    Anchored by Wellcome Trust;
Supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation

Southeast Asia shares a disproportionate burden of disease and mortality, with an estimated 5.6 million lives lost per year to endemic and emerging communicable diseases, and even more to non-communicable diseases including mental health. Given population density and vulnerability to disasters, Southeast Asia is also at high risk from the effects of climate change on health. This session will shed light on key infectious disease challenges in the region that are being compounded by climate change. Throughout, it will explore the step-change opportunities that innovation, research, and collaborative partnerships present in addressing these issues equitably, effectively and at scale.

A specific focus will be placed on looming and urgent disease threats facing the region over the coming decades: dengue which regional actors are already aware of and tackling, and anti-microbial resistance (AMR) which urgently requires attention by the region’s leaders. Beyond these specific threats, the session will highlight the transformative potential of improved disease surveillance to protect people across the most at-risk communities in the region from public health threats – including potential future pandemics.

    14:00 – 20:00 Level 3, Begonia Ballroom
Session 2: Blended Finance for the Low Carbon Transition

    Anchored by Clime Capital

This session looks to draw lessons from the successes of projects that have benefitted from the use of blended financing. In addition, the discussions have been curated to drive support for partnerships across the public, private and philanthropic sector to use blended financing as a tool to support our journey towards low carbon transition. Speakers will also share how technical assistance and debt plays a significant role to accelerating the low carbon transition.

    14:00 – 17:30 Level 3, Begonia Ballroom
Session 3: Insights to Impact - Shaping Tomorrow's Solutions with Strategic Philanthropy in Asia

    Anchored by Wealth Management Institute

There is a growing momentum amongst family offices and high net worth individuals to be more intentional in their giving and changemaking practices. In response, The Impact Philanthropy Partnership (IPP) Forum 2024 will spotlight concrete, real-world market needs and solutions, and how philanthropists can be a driving force for innovation and scale.

A highlight of the Forum will be the launch of the Asia Centre for Changemakers (ACC), supported by Temasek Trust and the Philanthropy Asia Alliance. The newly-minted ACC aims to galvanise purposeful wealth by curating a community of practice and capabilities.

10:00 – 11:30 Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm
Impact Journey (AM): Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm

Embark on a solar-powered boat tour around one of the world’s largest inland floating solar PV systems – the Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm. With over 122,000 floating solar panels spanning 45 hectares, this 60MWp solar farm is a significant stride towards quadrupling the nation’s solar energy deployment by 2025. Learn how PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency, leverages solar energy to produce each drop of clean tap water sustainably, making Singapore one of the few countries in the world to have a 100 per cent green waterworks system.

The electricity generated from the solar farm can power about 16,000 four-room HDB flats, equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by about 32 kilotonnes a year or taking 7,000 cars off the roads. The Sembcorp Tengeh Floating Solar Farm was also carefully designed to minimise impact on the reservoir’s water quality, flora and fauna. This immersive experience promises unparalleled insights into the harmonious blend of innovation and environmental responsibility.
