Accelerating Resilient and Circular Cities

Project Partner: Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities)

Geographies: ASEAN, South Asia, Middle East, and Africa

What is the core idea of the pilot?

In the fastest growing regions inclusive of Asia, waste generation is expected to triple by 2050. Meanwhile, it is estimated that incorporation of circular economy approaches can generate ~$4.5 trillion in economic growth, cut greenhouse gas emissions by 39%, and create millions of new jobs.

Cities globally are demanding innovative solutions to scale up circular economy initiatives. As the world’s leading urban resilience organisation present in 100 cities, Resilient Cities Network (R-Cities) is accelerating solutions and resilience action in the circularity sector.

Why is this innovative?

Cities are demanding innovative solutions and support to scale up circular economy initiatives and build more circular, resilient, and inclusive communities.

The Accelerating Circular and Resilient Cities CTA presents a unique opportunity for cities to lead the transition to circular economy by targeting three key pillars: food systems (implemented through the Urban Eats campaign)the built environment, and plastics (implemented through the Urban Ocean programme).

What will success look like?

R-Cities will work with partners and cities who demonstrate a strong commitment to circularity and resilience to design, prepare, and mobilise funding through the Resilient Community Impact Fund (RCIFund) for projects that respond to one or more of the key circular pillars. These projects will help cities to build more circular, resilient, and inclusive communities by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating green jobs in an equitable manner.

How will success be achieved?

  1. Phase 0: Programme Mobilisation

    • - Creation of a Global Alliance of Partners and Cities

  2. Phase 1: Project Preparations

    • - Preparation of Circularity Projects on Food, Plastics, and the Built Environment

  3. Phase 2: Project Implementation

    • - Implementation of Catalytic Projects leading to reduction of GHG emissions

Who is leading the project?

Resilient Cities Network is the world’s leading urban resilience network. Present in 100 cities, 40 countries, and 6 continents, R-Cities brings together knowledge, practice, partnerships, and funding empowering cities to build a safe, equitable, and sustainable future for all.
